Boon Siew Honda Racing Team’s Mohd Izam Ikmal chalked up a second win of the weekend with yet another sterling performance in Race 2 of the MSBK 250 class. Relegated to start from the back of the grid for the entire race weekend (due to a technical infringement during the qualifier), Izam was able to cut through the grid like a hot knife through butter. By the time the riders dived into Turn 1, Izam was already on the tail of pole sitter Mohd Danial Syahmi from SIC Racing. Daniel immediately turned on his defensive racing mode, fending off a super-aggressive Izam. The two riders were lapping below their respective qualifying times, but were still a cut above the rest. By the mid-point of the race, the leading duo were already five seconds ahead of the rest. While Daniel and Izam traded leads at the front, ONEXOX TKKR Racing Team team mates Mohd Shafiq Rosli and Mohd Syafieq Aiman Mohd Fauzi kept the fight for P3 within the family. Up ahead, pressure from Izam forced Daniel into an error at the last turn. It was the opening Izam had been waiting for. He picked up his second victory with a time of 20’12.530s. Syahmi conceded in second place with 20’13.126s and Mohd Shafiq Rasol finished in third. “It was touch and go throughout the 8 laps. I simply couldn’t get away from Danial. The victory could have gone either way if Danial had not ran wide at the last corner,” said Izam after the race. Further down afield, the battle to win the ‘Weekend Warrior’ crown in the MSBK B class hotted up. Mohd Izam Ikmal turned the disappointment of starting from the back of the grid (following a disqualification post-qualifying) into a remarkable comeback. But a rocket start was all the Boon Siew Honda Racing Team rider needed to get himself back into the game. By the time the grid flagged off and swooped into Turn 1, Izam had already made it to P5. Within a lap, he joined Mohd Danial Syahmi and Mohd Shafiq Rasol in the leading pack. The battle royale between the three top riders went all the way to the finish line with Danial Syahmi and Izam Ikmal consistently swapping leads. A last corner move by Izam at the final lap secured him the first win of the season with 20’09.226s. “While I was disappointed that I had to start from the back, there was nothing I could do except plan to overtake every rider until I get to the leaders. I am really pleased with how things have turned out,” said Izam. Boon Siew Honda Racing Team’s Mohd Izam Ikmal set a new MSBK 250 lap record during the qualifying session for Round 1 of the 2021 Malaysia Superbike Championship. After clocking fastest in the free practice with 2’28.590s, Izam bettered his time by more than a second when he secured his right to park on pole position with 2’27.141s. Unfortunately, a technical infringement during the post-qualifying scrutineering erased Izam’s new laptime and the Boon Siew Honda Racing Team rider will have to start the races from the back of the grid. SIC Racing’s Mohd Danial Syahmi A Shahril inherits the pole position with the second fastest time on the grid, 2’28.508s. With Danial Syahmi’s Kawasaki Ninja 250 on pole, Mohd Shafiq Rasol made it a mixed front row when he clocked third fastest 2’30.615s with his Yamaha YZF-R25. A year away from the Honda CBR250RR has done nothing to dampen Izam’s natural feel for his 250cc race bike. The Boon Siew Honda Racing Team rider was quickest to get in form, completing the first day of free practice at the top of the combined timesheets. Izam clocked 2’28.590s to take provisional pole. “We already had our base setting from 2020. Working with that, today was all about getting back into rhythm. After a year-long hiatus, the Malaysian superbike riders finally have the chance to get back on the track. The announcement that the 2021 season of the Malaysia Superbike Championship (MSBK) will be held at the Sepang Circuit this weekend has brought out some of the biggest names in the Malaysian motorcycle racing fraternity. The MSBK1000 will most likely be the battleground between Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman and Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi. Both riders are acknowledged as among the best superbike riders in this region. Things are even more interesting in the MSBK600 class where Khairul Idham Pawi is making his racing comeback with the ONEXOX TKKR Racing Team. Mohd Syarifuddin Azman, who is slated to make his full season GP debut next year, will also arrive on the grid with the ZK Racing Team. From the Honda camp, Azroy Hakeem Anuar and Mohd Helmi Azman will finally get to put their brand new Honda CBR600RR through its paces. The bike that was launched in 2020 has yet to strut its stuff on the track. And for the first time in two years, spectators are finally welcome back to the grandstand. Entry to the grandstand is free, but limited only to adults above 18 years old, and must be fully vaccinated. Fans can expect to witness race battles in three classes – the MSBK1000, MSBK600 and MSBK250. In total, three races will be held over the weekend. “The last two years has been quite challenging for the motorcycle racing industry. We are grateful to be back and looking forward to the day when our foreign friends can also join in the race. Meanwhile, the entries for Round 1 is looking to be very promising with all our top riders competing,” said Ron Hogg, Director of Two Wheels Motor Racing, the race promoters of the MSBK. In preparation for the 2021 season, the Malaysia Superbike Championship (MSBK) is initiating a talent call to all riders and teams who are interested in the Boon Siew Honda 250cc Racing Support Programme. This first step is designed to gauge exact interest in order for Boon Siew Honda to start the preparation process for this programme. “It should be noted that this is just a registration of interest. There will be no upfront payments required at this stage, nor will there be any obligations to continue with the programme,” said Ron Hogg, Director of Two Wheels Motor Racing Sdn Bhd. The Boon Siew Honda 250cc Racing Support Programme, which was launched in September this year, will offer race-prepared Honda CBR250RR motorcycles at a discounted price to interested teams and riders. The basic spec of the bikes will be prepared by Boon Siew Honda, ready-to-race in the MSBK250 class. The Boon Siew Honda 250cc Racing Support programme will become a part of Boon Siew Honda’s talent development vehicle, aimed at bridging the gap between Cub Prix and the Asia Road Racing Championship. Boon Siew Honda Racing Team’s young protégé, Mohd Idlan Hakimi Raduan continued to impress in the 250cc genre when he aced the first day of free practices in the season opener of the 2020 Malaysia Superbike Championship (MSBK). Idlan topped the MSBK250 free practice sessions with 2’29.337s. However, the most impressive rider of the day would be SIC Racing Team’s Mohd Danial Syahmi A Shahril. Danial, returning to racing after a long injury, ended the day as the second fastest rider with 2’30.160s.
