Boon Siew Honda Racing Team’s Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi successfully claimed the 2021 Malaysia Superbike Champion MSBK 1000 title and earned the right to don the MSBK premiere class challenge trophy – the RK Shogun Helmet. Equipped with a brand new Honda CBR1000 RR-R at Round 2 of the MSBK last weekend, a hattrick of wins placed the title hunt directly in Zaqhwan’s control. After a tough battle against Kasma Daniel in Race 2, Zaqhwan capped off a successful win with a lights-to-flag win in Race 3. “I am so thrilled and so pleased with the outcome of this weekend. Finally, I have a chance to get a taste of the new bike,” said Zaqhwan. The new bike was slated to be Zaqhwan’s ride in the FIM Asia Road Racing Championship but with the event cancelled due to the pandemic, this was the first time the Honda rider had had the chance to be competitive on the bike. “We got some really good mileage with the bike this weekend. Kudos to my team for their superb engineering getting the bike in race shape within record time. I can’t wait to race this bike in the ARRC next year because I believe that this will make me super competitive,” said Zaqhwan who won Race 3 with a time of 21’27.869s, 4.2 seconds ahead of the rest of the grid. Behind Zaqhwan, Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman posted his best result of the weekend when he finished second in Race 3. Ibrahim Norrodin was on song at Round 2 of the 2021 Malaysia Superbike Championship when he notched up a hattrick of wins in the MSBK 600. The SIC Racing team rider capped off a successful weekend with a strong finish in Race 3 that he won uncontested with a time of 21’56.275s. His brother Adam joined Ibrahim on the podium in second place while Mohd Helmi Azman took third. However, it was Ibrahim’s team mate Mohd Syarifuddin Azman who had the most to celebrate. Despite not winning a single race over the course of the two rounds in 2021, Syarifuddin’s play-it-safe strategy paid off when he took the title with 105 points. Syarifuddin finished on the podium in five out of six races. The only race where he was absent from the podium was the final race of the season. He crossed the finish line in fourth. Ibrahim’s hattrick pushed him up the championship table. Handicapped by his two crashes in Round 1, Ibrahim’s best position this season placed him second overall with 95 points. The race for the MSBK 250 title came down to a final showdown between championship leaders Mohd Izam Ikmal and Mohd Danial Syahmi. At the end of Race 2, only two points separated the two rivals at the top of the championship table. With the title at stake, the final race of the season for the MSBK 250 class opened with Izam off to a flying start. Predictably, Izam led a procession of four top riders with Danial Syahmi, Mohd Hakim Danish and Mohd Idlan Hakimi Raduan in tow. The first half of the 8-lap race was a rather civilized affair, with everyone content to follow Izam’s lead. But as the pressure piled up, the unforced errors began showing up. The race rhythm hotted up on Lap 7 when mechanical issues forced Idlan Hakimi out of the race. Sandwiched between the two SIC Racing riders Danial Syahmi and Hakim Danish, Izam came under concerted attack from the team mates. However, Izam was only concerned about one competitor, which was Danial Syahmi. Allowing Hakim Danish to go through into the win, Izam did his level best to block Danial from overtaking him at the last corner. Hakim won the final race with 20’05.564s. Having effectively blocked Danial Syahmi’s line, Izam raced home in second with 20’05.565s to confirm his position as the 2021 MSBK 250 champion. Danial Syahmi took third place with 20’05.730s. In the MSBK 250 B class, MME Racing Team Malaysia’s Ahmad Farhan Iqwan finished strong with 21’42.322s followed by Daing Jamilus Herianto with 21’46.409s. Boon Siew Honda Racing Team’s Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi has officially taken charge of the MSBK 1000 title chase. Zaqhwan has been on a winning streak while taking his brand new Honda CBR1000 RRR SP for its race debut at Round 2 of the 2021 Malaysia Superbike Championship this weekend. Zaqhwan followed up on his Race 1 win with a second consecutive victory in Race 2. Starting from the front row, Zaqhwan took command almost immediately, with Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman, Ramdan Rosli and Kasma Daniel in hot pursuit. The four way battle lasted up to Lap 5 when the two BMWs of the ONEXOX TKKR Racing Team began to show signs of struggling with tyre wear. As Azlan dropped out of the leading group, Kasma astride his Yamaha YZF-R1M was left to battle against the top speed of Zaqhwan’s Honda CBR1000 RRR SP. In his attempts to wrest the lead from Zaqhwan, Kasma set the fastest lap of the race on Lap 8 – a time of 2’07.880s. But nothing doing. With a flick of his wrist, Zaqhwan was able to easily overtake Kasma on the back straight. The Honda rider crossed the finish line in first place with 21’30.721s, and effectively takes over the title hunt in the MSBK 1000 class. Kasma Daniel settled for second with 21’31.313s while Azlan picked up 16 points in third with 21’37.225s. Khoo Chee Yen once again held the advantage in the MSBK 1000 B when he completed the race with 22’58.108s. Teo Yew Joe was second in the MSBK 1000 B with 22’58.885s while Nik Hadi Nik Mahmood brought his Ducati Panigale V4R home in third. A string of five consecutive podiums has placed Mohd Syarifuddin Azman in an unassailable position to lift the 2021 MSBK 600 title. At Round 2 of the 2021 Malaysia Superbike Championship, Syarifuddin came within 6 points of winning the title in Race 2. The battle in the MSBK 600 class began almost as soon as the race got flagged off. Adam Norrodin got off to the best start as he dove into the holeshot to take an early advantage. With a 6-bike leading group in hot pursuit, Adam ran wide at Turn 4 on Lap 4. This error cost Adam dearly as he loses all his position at the front. A lap later, disaster for championship contender Mohd Helmi Azman. Helmi lost control of the bike at Turn 15 and was flipped off his machine as he hit the gravel. This unfortunate incident almost ended his pursuit for the title. Back in front, Azroy Hakeem Anuar and Ibrahim Norrodin set the race pace. At the tail end of the 6-rider leading group, Khairul Idham Pawi showed up with a surprise as he swapped his Yamaha for a Honda CBR600RR. The battle dragged on right up to the final lap when Ibrahim snared the lead with his superior drive at the front straight. Azroy reacted almost immediately and narrowed the gap as the riders thundered down the back straight. Unfortunately for Azroy, the Honda rider ran wide again at the apex of Turn 15. This opened the opportunity for a SIC Racing 1-2 finish with Mohd Ibrahim Norrodin in first place with 21’57.215s and Mohd Syarifuddin Azman in second with 21’57.385s. 0.043 seconds behind, Azroy came home in third. Syarifuddin had been the most consistent rider in the MSBK 600 class to date. “My strategy during the race is to follow. I didn’t want to get involved at the front because they were really going for it. Instead, I preferred to control my pace and wait to take advantage of any unforced errors from the leading riders,” said Syarifuddin who is now leading by 92 points. Helmi Azman still has a mathematical chance when he managed to still finish 8th in Race 2. However, with a 19-point gap, Helmi will need nothing short of a miracle to recoup his position. As the 2021 season of the Malaysia Superbike Championship unfolds over two rounds and six races, the one thing that has struck the MSBK paddock is the increasing maturity displayed by SIC Racing rider Mohd Danial Syahmi. The young rider who has bounced back strong after a potentially career-ending injury in 2018, has proven that he has lost none of his drive and determination. At the season finale of the 2021 season, Danial started Race 2 from pole position. The 8-lap race was a master class in team play as SIC Racing duo Danial and Mohd Hakim Danish went head to head against Boon Siew Honda Racing Team’s Mohd Izam Ikmal and Mohd Idlan Hakimi. There was more than just the trophy on the line for the four riders. Danial needed a strong finish to stay within title contention while Izam desperately needed to get back onto the podium to make up for his ride-through penalty in Race 1. As the pressure mounted, it was Mohd Hakim Danish who pulled a rocket start to lead into the holeshot. But there was no getting away from the top four riders of the class. The quartet were wheel-to-wheel from start to finish. Despite individual attempts at breaking away, everyone were still jumbled together on Lap 7. Danial managed to pull a lead at the start of the final lap, but the straight line speed of the Honda CBR250RR brought Izam Ikmal right back on his tail at the back straight. A final sprint to the finish line saw Danial pipping Izam to the chequered flag by a mere 0.023 seconds. Danial scored his second consecutive win of the weekend with 20’06.673s. Izam Ikmal had to settle for second with 20’06.696s. Mohd Idlan Hakimi snared the final podium slot in third with 20’07.091s. This hard-won victory has narrowed the gap between the top two riders in the MSBK 250 title chase. Izam still leads with 108 points, while Danial is now only two points behind with 106. Meanwhile Ahmad Farhan Iqwan topped the MSBK 250 B class with 21’40.267s. The MME Racing Team Malaysia rider enjoyed a relatively unchallenged lead, with second placed Mohd Fauzi Hassan 1.5 seconds behind. Daing Jamilus Herianto was third in the MSBK 250 B race. Making its race debut for the first time at Round 2 of the Malaysia Superbike Championship, the brand new Honda CBR1000 RRR SP in the hands of 2 times Asian champion Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi has proven itself to be a formidable race machine. The 10-lap Race 1 of the MSBK 1000 class was more than just a battle between Zaqhwan Zaidi and Kasma Daniel Kasmayuddin. It was a straight-out sprint battle between the Honda’s brute strength versus the Yamaha’s finesse, top speed versus handling, and last but not least, Zaqhwan’s experience against Kasma’s never-say-die attitude. Yamaha Racing Team ASEAN’s Kasma had stolen the limelight all weekend. The young Yamaha rider topped the first day of free practice and set a new track record for the MSBK 1000 class (2’06.957s) during the qualifier. On the other hand, Zaqhwan’s progress was more measured. “It’s a brand new bike. We’ve never had the chance to break it in. So we had to pace ourselves throughout the first three practice sessions. To be honest, the bike is not fully set up yet. Thankfully we managed to whip everything in shape for Race 1. At least now I know the potential of the bike,” said Zaqhwan at the podium after chalking up his second win of the season with 21’26.761s. Kasma, who plaintively said that he needed more power after the race, finished second with 21’27.210s. Finally, Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman took up the third spot on the podium with 21’37.778s. The seasoned campaigner from the ONEXOX TKKR Racing Team is still the man to beat for the 2021 MSBK title. With 74 points under his belt, Azlan leads Zaqhwan by eight points. Meanwhile, Khoo Chee Yen from Team Hiap Aik Suzuki Racing took top honours in the MSBK 1000 B with 23’22.289s. Khoo was trailed by Teo Yew Joe and Nik Hadi Nik Mahmood. Team SIC Racing’s last-minute decision to add Adam Norrodin onto their MSBK 600 roster has obviously paid off. The inclusion of the highly experienced rider changed the dynamics of the race. In Race 1 of the MSBK 600 for Round 2, the team helmed by former GP rider Zulfahmi Khairuddin made a clean sweep of the MSBK 600 podium with Mohd Ibrahim Norrodin in first place, Mohd Adam Norrodin in second and Mohd Syarifuddin Azman in third. The MSBK 600 Race 1 was a 5-way battle that lasted the full 10 laps. The SIC Racing trio went head to head against Boon Siew Honda Racing Team’s Azroy Hakeem Anuar and Mohd Helmi Azman. It was one of the most intense MSBK 600 races in recent years. “I didn’t have the best of starts. In fact, I had to make up for a lot of ground as I almost lost touch with the leading group. But I kept my cool and I knew that I would be able to out-break most of these others riders and therein lies my advantage. I just wanted to win this race. As I overtook first Syarifuddin and then Adam, I no longer cared that they were my team-mates or my brother,” Ibrahim described the race. Behind the leading five, mechanical gremlins forced Khairul Idham Pawi out of the race after only a single lap. Nazirul Izzat and Moh dAkid Aziz continued to make improvements in P6 and P7. The title gap between Mohd Izam Ikmal and Mohd Danial Syahmi has narrowed when Danial scored his first MSBK 250 win of the season at Race 1, Round 2 of the 2021 Malaysia Superbike Championship. Danial, who is racing under the SIC Racing livery this season, started the race from pole position. Within line of sight, his closest competitor would be Mohd Idlan Hakimi Raduan the from Boon Siew Honda Racing Team who qualified for third on the grid. Championship leader Izam Ikmal slotted between the two riders, but with a ride-through penalty looming, Izam would not be a podium contender, at least for Race 1. While Izam served out his ride-through penalty, the battle for the top three podium slots fell in favour of Mohd Danial Syahmi who grabbed the chequered flag with a time of 20’06.188s. Honda rider Idlan finished in second followed by SIC Racing’s Mohd Hakim Danish Ramli in third with 20’15.497s. After serving out his ride-through penalty, Izam finished fourth in the race, picking up enough points to keep his title hopes alive. Yamaha Racing Team ASEAN’s Kasma Daniel Kasmayuddin is intent on making up for his Race 3 disqualification at the previous leg of the 2021 Malaysia Superbike Championship (MSBK). Eager to clinch the MSBK 1000 title in his superbike debut, Kasma set a new benchmark for the class when he topped the first day of practice with 2’07.237s. Kasma erased the previous lap record set by Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi from the Boon Siew Honda Racing Team, which was clocked at 2’07.3417s. The weekend opens with Kasma standing second overall in the MSBK 1000 standings, holding 45 points to Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman’s 58. If not for his disqualification from Race 3 in the previous round for dangerous riding, Kasma would have been leading the title chase, a significant feat for the rookie rider. A strong finish in Round 2 will give Kasma a fighting chance to add the title of MSBK 1000 Champion to his resume. “Our work is far from done. We’re still tweaking our setting. The target time for this weekend is to hit 2’06,” said Kasma briefly. Meanwhile, Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi from the Boon Siew Honda Racing Team who is breaking in his new Honda CBR1000 RRR SP this weekend posted the second fastest time of the day with 2’08.503s. Championship leader Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman clocked third fastest with 2’08.550s. In the MSBK 1000 B class, Suzuki riders Khoo Chee Yen and Joey Teo are intent on giving Round 1 Weekend Warrior Nik Hadi Nik Mahmood a run for his money. The three riders are posting the most competitive times with Khoo Chee Yen in the lead with 2’16.765s followed by Nik Hadi with 2’17.520s, and Teo Yew Joe third fastest of the trio with 2’18.526s.
