The MSBK 1000 category of the 2021 Malaysia Superbike Championship (MSBK) served up three different winners under three vastly different racing conditions over a single weekend of its season opener at the Sepang International Circuit. Kasma Daniel Kasmayudin made an impressive debut when he won a blistering hot Race 1. Under rainy conditions for Race 2, Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi emerged with the advantage. Race conditions were finally perfect in Race 3 and Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman finally got his bike settings just right for the race. Race 3 flagged off with two aggressive youngsters in the lead – Kasma Daniel Kasmayuddin (Yamaha Racing Team ASEAN) and Ahmad Daniel Haiqal (MME Racing Team Malaysia). It was an impressive early showing between the two young riders, especially from Daniel Haiqal who carried the fight to Kasma and Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman. As the three riders swapped leads around the Sepang International Circuit, an aggressive move by Kasma at Turn 6 on Lap 6 saw the Yamaha rider literally riding into Haiqal’s BMW. Both riders ended on the gravel. The incident ended Haiqal’s race, and caused the race stewards to disqualify Kasma due to his unruly conduct. Without the two younger riders in the leading group, Azlan had an easier time maintaining his pace at the front of the race. After struggling for traction all weekend long, Azlan ended the MSBK season opener on a positive note when he won with a time of 24’18.716s. “Our team really had a tough time setting up our bike for the race this weekend. It’s a brand new BMW S1000RR and I’ve only ridden it three times, including this weekend. Things finally clicked into place for Race 3 and I was able to get into rhythm,” said Azlan. A distant 13 seconds behind Azlan, his confused team mate, Mohd Ramdan Rosli bumbled his way to P2 with 24’32.591s. “This is my first exposure to the BMW S1000RR. I got myself a bit muddled with the many electronics functions available on the bike. Luckily, I was able to sort things out even while fighting with Zaqhwan,” said Ramdan. The change of weather did not do Zaqhwan Zaidi any favours. After an easy wet win in Race 2, the Boon Siew Honda Racing Team rider had a harder time making his stock standard CBR1000R SP2 go in Race 3. Zaqhwan had to content with P3, completing the race with 24’38.193s. Azlan Shah currently leads the MSBK 1000 class with 58 points under his belt. Despite his disqualification from Race 3, Kasma still stands second overall on the standings with 45 points. Further down the field, Nik Hadi Nik Mahmood was crowned as the MSBK 1000 Weekend Warrior. Nik Hadi aced both Race 2 and Race 3 of the MSBK 1000 B class despite starting from the pitlane in Race 3. “I had a problem with my launch control at the start of Race 3. It couldn’t be fixed immediately on the grid so I had no choice but to start from the pitlane. I basically rode like it was my last race just to catch up and overtake CY Khoo,” said Nik Hadi. It has been a drama-filled weekend in the MSBK 600 class at the season opener of the 2021 Malaysia Superbike Champikonship (MSBK). First the class was rocked by a spectacular comeback by former GP rider Khairul Idham Pawi, then came the surprise entry from Mohd Syarifuddin Azman. Finally, the entire race weekend had been characterized by the spectacular crashes of Mohd Ibrahim Norrodin and Azroy Hakeem Anuar in Race 1 and Race 2. The two rivals finally managed to finish a race in Race 3. The race started off gingerly, with most of the riders going easy in the mixed track conditions. The pace picked up from Lap 3 onwards with Ibrahim in the lead followed by Azroy and Sharifuddin. As the riders gained confidence, Mohd Helmi Azman joined the leading group on Lap 9, turning the final race of the weekend into a straight-out fight between the Boon Siew Honda Racing Team and SIC Racing. The relief among the team crew was palpable when Azroy finally crossed the finish line to grab his first 600cc victory of the season with 25’01.251s. “I am really grateful for this opportunity. It has been a while since I have been on board the 600cc bike. After two crashes, this win is a real morale booster for me,” said Azroy. Ibrahim Norrodin ended the race in second with 25’01.663s. Speaking from the podium, Ibrahim thanks and apologized to his team for the many crashes he suffered over the weekend. Mohd Syarifuddin Azman finished third with 25’01.773s. Syarifuddin was the most successful and consistent rider of the weekend. The SIC Racing rider currently leads the MSBK 600 with 56 points after picking up a hattrick of podium finishes. Boon Siew Honda Racing Team’s Mohd Izam Ikmal was the most consistent rider in the season opener of the 2021 Malaysia Superbike Championship (MSBK). The young rider served up a hattrick of wins in the MSBK 250 class, culminating with a dramatic finish in Race 3. Again, starting from the back of the grid, Izam’s rocket start put him within the leading group by the first corner. Izam resumed his rivalry with Mohd Danial Syahmi from SIC Racing for the lead. This time, however, Mohd Syafieq Aiman Mohd Fauzi from ONEXOX TKKR Racing Team joined the fray, making Race 3 of the MSBK 250, a three-corner fight. Racing under overcast skies and on a semi-dry track, the three riders battled throughout the 8-lap race. As the riders headed to Turn 15 for the final sprint to the chequered flag, Izam got himself into the inside racing line while Danial Syahmi tried to make do with the outside line. The two riders touched. Izam survived, but Danial was bumped off the track. Izam raced to his third win of the weekend with 22’30.722s ONEXOX TKKR Racing Team’s Mohd Syafieq Aiman clocked his best result of the weekend in second place with 22’31.285s. Danial Syahmi got up in time to make it to the podium in third place. “I almost crashed on Turn 5 in the last three laps. When we got to the final lap, I was just thinking to out-brake Danial at the last corner. I was on the inside line, Danial was outside. I tried to stay in my line but I didn’t think that we would touch. I would like to apologize to Danial for the incident,” said Izam. Uncertain track conditions was as child’s play for Boon Siew Honda Racing Team’s Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi. Despite skipping out on the qualifying session and Race 1 earlier in the weekend, Race 2 of the MSBK 1000 in the season opener of the 2021 Malaysia Superbike Championship turned out to be a walk in the park for the hugely experienced superbike rider. Starting from the back of the grid, Zaqhwan quickly dominated the 10-lap race, extending his lead to Kasma Daniel Kasmayudin by almost three seconds a lap. By lap 6, Zaqhwan was almost six seconds ahead of the rest. A scary moment on Lap 7 almost caught Zaqhwan out. However, the Honda rider was able to salvage the situation by going off-track at Turn 9. Luckily, Zaqhwan had enough buffer between himself and Kasma to stay in the lead and eventually ended the race in P1 with 25’21.870s. Yamaha Racing Team ASEAN’s Kasma Daniel, winner of Race 1, also enjoyed a smooth and easy race in P2. As the chequered flag came down, Kasma crossed the finish line 4.441s behind Zaqhwan. ONEXOX TKKR Racing Team’s Mohd Ramdan Rosli outpaced his senior team mate Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman when he finished third with 25’58.785s. Elsewhere, MME Racing Team Malaysia’s Ahmad Daniel Haiqal crashed out of the race in pursuit of his second podium of the weekend. In the MSBK 1000 B category, Nik Hadi Nik Mahmood was unbeatable astride his Ducati Panigale V4. Nik Hadi won Race 2 ahead of Khoo Chee Yen from Team Hiap Aik Suzuki Racing. After Race 2, both riders are now tied on points for the ‘Weekend Warrior’ crown. A heavy downpour brought out the red flag a lap into the start of the MSBK 600 Race 2. The race was shortened to a 6-lap stint, which set the stage for a battle of the rain masters. The grid re-assembled with only six riders. Yamaha Racing Team ASEAN duo were clearly absent. According to the team management, neither Nazirul Izzat Bahauddin nor Aiman Tahiruddin have had any experience racing the Yamaha YZF-R6 in the wet. As such, the team did not want to take the risk of injury. At the re-start, it was Azroy Hakeem Anuar who first threw down the gauntlet. The Boon Siew Honda Racing Team rider held the lead into the two opening laps with pole sitter Ibrahim Norrodin from SIC Racing trying hard to get past. The two riders, who had crashed out of Race 1 on Saturday, were determined to finish on the podium. Both Azroy and Ibrahim set a punishing pace despite the uncertain track conditions. Ibrahim had a big scare at the end of Lap 2 at Turn 15, but managed to salvage the situation. The SIC Racing rider immediately went on the attack. The pace was clearly too much on the rain-slicked tarmac. Half a lap later, both Ibrahim and Azroy simultaneously high-sided out of Turn 3. This would be the second crash of the weekend for the two rivals. Behind the dueling duo, it was the riders who opted for a more conservative ride who benefitted from the situation. Mohd Helmi Azman from Boon Siew Honda Racing Team picked up an easy first win of the season with 15’39.594s. SIC Racing’s Mohd Syarifuddin Azman was second across the line, followed by Race 1 winner, Khairul Idham Pawi in third. “Unlike Azroy and Ibrahim, I wasn’t able to get into groove when the race re-started. Somehow, the feeling wasn’t right. I was just happy to get past Khairul and Syarifuddin and would have been content to finish third,” said Helmi. “I didn’t see Azroy and Ibrahim crashing out. By the time I got to Turn 3, all I saw were the two bikes lying at the side of the track. From then on, it was just a matter of maintaining my pace and focus until the end of the 6-lap race,” said Helmi. Boon Siew Honda Racing Team’s Mohd Izam Ikmal chalked up a second win of the weekend with yet another sterling performance in Race 2 of the MSBK 250 class. Relegated to start from the back of the grid for the entire race weekend (due to a technical infringement during the qualifier), Izam was able to cut through the grid like a hot knife through butter. By the time the riders dived into Turn 1, Izam was already on the tail of pole sitter Mohd Danial Syahmi from SIC Racing. Daniel immediately turned on his defensive racing mode, fending off a super-aggressive Izam. The two riders were lapping below their respective qualifying times, but were still a cut above the rest. By the mid-point of the race, the leading duo were already five seconds ahead of the rest. While Daniel and Izam traded leads at the front, ONEXOX TKKR Racing Team team mates Mohd Shafiq Rosli and Mohd Syafieq Aiman Mohd Fauzi kept the fight for P3 within the family. Up ahead, pressure from Izam forced Daniel into an error at the last turn. It was the opening Izam had been waiting for. He picked up his second victory with a time of 20’12.530s. Syahmi conceded in second place with 20’13.126s and Mohd Shafiq Rasol finished in third. “It was touch and go throughout the 8 laps. I simply couldn’t get away from Danial. The victory could have gone either way if Danial had not ran wide at the last corner,” said Izam after the race. Further down afield, the battle to win the ‘Weekend Warrior’ crown in the MSBK B class hotted up. Mohd Fauzi Hassan, Daing Jamilus Herianto, Abdul Hafiz Che Hussin and Mohd Fauzi Mohd Mustakim put up a significant 8-lap fight which eventually ended in favour of Fauzi Hassan. Kasma Daniel Kasmayuddin enjoyed a dream debut in the litre class when he effortlessly walked away with the race win in Race 1 of the 2021 Malaysia Superbike Championship (MSBK) season opener at the Sepang International Circuit. Starting the race from pole position, Kasma enjoyed a lights-to-flag victory unencumbered by challenges from any other rider. The young debutant, equipped with the Yamaha YZF-R1M, was super smooth throughout the 10-lap race which he won with a time of 21’23.783s. A whopping 9.9 seconds behind Kasma, Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman visibly struggled with an uncooperative bike. Azlan was forced to settle for second with 21’32.698s, followed by MME Racing Team Malaysia’s Ahmad Daniel Haiqal in third. “While it is thrilling to win my debut race in the 1000cc class, I am looking forward to more battles in the coming races. I learn nothing if I race alone and just keep to my race pace. So I’m hoping Azlan and his team will have resolved his suspension issues by Race 2 and I’m also looking forward to Zaqhwan coming back to join the grid for Race 2. At least then, I’ll have someone to play with,” said Kasma. Round 1 of the Malaysia Superbike Championship (MSBK) turned out to be the perfect platform for former Malaysian GP rider Khairul Idham Pawi to get back into racing form. Starting the MSBK 600 race from second row behind front liners Mohd Ibrahim Norrodin, Azroy Hakeem Anuar and Mohd Helmi Azman, Khairul got off to a late start while the two 2020 model Honda CBR600RR set the initial race pace. The MSBK 600 race had been touted as a five-corner fight between Ibrahim, Azroy, Helmi, Khairul and Mohd Sharifuddin Azman. The rivalry between the front row were apparent from the start with both Ibrahim and Azroy scrabbling for the same racing line. While fighting for the same inch of tarmac on Lap 2, Ibrahim and Azroy touched. Both riders were unceremoniously dumped onto the gravel. This left the way open for Khairul Idham to slip into the lead. Cool and collected, Khairul dictated the race rhythm from the front of the group. “I had a really bad start because I’ve been away from the starting grid for almost a year. But I quickly noticed that Ibrahim and Azroy were making a lot of mistakes, so I decided to bide my time. For the first lap, I was content to follow. Once I got into the lead, I found that Helmi was also making a lot of unforced errors,” Khairul described. One of Helmi’s unforced error included a last-lap last-corner gamble when he tried to out-brake everyone to take the win. Unfortunately for Helmi from the Boon Siew Honda Racing Team, the plan backfired when he ran wide. Helmi’s mistake allowed Khairul Idham Pawi to race unencumbered to the finish line and complete his comeback race in winning style with 21’59.034s “It was a really good race and I enjoyed it very much,” he concluded. Mohd Syarifuddin Azman from SIC Racing trailed Khairul Idham to the finish line in second place. Helmi Azman had to concede in third with 21’59.430s. Mohd Izam Ikmal turned the disappointment of starting from the back of the grid (following a disqualification post-qualifying) into a remarkable comeback. But a rocket start was all the Boon Siew Honda Racing Team rider needed to get himself back into the game. By the time the grid flagged off and swooped into Turn 1, Izam had already made it to P5. Within a lap, he joined Mohd Danial Syahmi and Mohd Shafiq Rasol in the leading pack. The battle royale between the three top riders went all the way to the finish line with Danial Syahmi and Izam Ikmal consistently swapping leads. A last corner move by Izam at the final lap secured him the first win of the season with 20’09.226s. “While I was disappointed that I had to start from the back, there was nothing I could do except plan to overtake every rider until I get to the leaders. I am really pleased with how things have turned out,” said Izam. While Izam’s Honda CBR250RR took top honours, Mohd Danial Syahmi’s Kawasaki Ninja 250 finished second with 20’09.294s while Mohd Shafiq Rasol from the ONEXOX TKKR Racing Team piloted his Yamaha YZF-R25 to third place. Kasma Daniel Kasmayuddin from the Yamaha Racing Team ASEAN looks to have taken to 1000cc racing like a duck to water. Racing in his maiden MSBK 1000 class in the 2021 Malaysia Superbike Championship, Kasma’s performance to date has been particularly impressive, especially when he secured the right to park his bike on pole position with a quickest lap of 2’07.881s. Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi was noticeably absent from the grid. A prior engagement to film a launch video for Honda meant that Zaqhwan had had to skip the qualifying and Race 1. Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman clocked second fastest with 2’08.423s while MME Racing Team Malaysia’s Ahmad Danial Haiqal grabbed the last spot on the front row with 2’08.529s. Mohd Ramdan Rosli, Azlan’s TKKR team mate, was fourth quickest in the session followed by Nik Hadi Nik Mahmood in fifth with 2’16.112s. Nik’s entry was particularly note-worthy.
