The title gap between Mohd Izam Ikmal and Mohd Danial Syahmi has narrowed when Danial scored his first MSBK 250 win of the season at Race 1, Round 2 of the 2021 Malaysia Superbike Championship. Danial, who is racing under the SIC Racing livery this season, started the race from pole position. Within line of sight, his closest competitor would be Mohd Idlan Hakimi Raduan the from Boon Siew Honda Racing Team who qualified for third on the grid. Championship leader Izam Ikmal slotted between the two riders, but with a ride-through penalty looming, Izam would not be a podium contender, at least for Race 1. While Izam served out his ride-through penalty, the battle for the top three podium slots fell in favour of Mohd Danial Syahmi who grabbed the chequered flag with a time of 20’06.188s. Honda rider Idlan finished in second followed by SIC Racing’s Mohd Hakim Danish Ramli in third with 20’15.497s. After serving out his ride-through penalty, Izam finished fourth in the race, picking up enough points to keep his title hopes alive. After Race 1, Izam leads by a 7-point margin ahead of Danial Syahmi. Meanwhile, Ahmad Farhan Iqwan representing MME Racing Team Malaysia aced the MSBK 250 B class with a time of 21’51.860s. On course to win his first MSBK 250 title, Mohd Izam Ikmal is still feeling upbeat as Round 2 of the 2021 Malaysia Superbike Championship gets underway at the Sepang International Circuit this weekend. In spite of a looming ride-through penalty which he must serve out in Race 1, the Boon Siew Honda Racing Team rider has expressed confidence that he will end the weekend on a triumphant note. Izam was slapped with a ride-through penalty for dangerous riding in the previous leg of the championship series. “Last round I was racing solo. Boon Siew Honda Racing Team’s Mohd Izam Ikmal was the most consistent rider in the season opener of the 2021 Malaysia Superbike Championship (MSBK). The young rider served up a hattrick of wins in the MSBK 250 class, culminating with a dramatic finish in Race 3. Again, starting from the back of the grid, Izam’s rocket start put him within the leading group by the first corner. Izam resumed his rivalry with Mohd Danial Syahmi from SIC Racing for the lead. This time, however, Mohd Syafieq Aiman Mohd Fauzi from ONEXOX TKKR Racing Team joined the fray, making Race 3 of the MSBK 250, a three-corner fight. Racing under overcast skies and on a semi-dry track, the three riders battled throughout the 8-lap race. As the riders headed to Turn 15 for the final sprint to the chequered flag, Izam got himself into the inside racing line while Danial Syahmi tried to make do with the outside line. The two riders touched. Izam survived, but Danial was bumped off the track. Izam raced to his third win of the weekend with 22’30.722s ONEXOX TKKR Racing Team’s Mohd Syafieq Aiman clocked his best result of the weekend in second place with 22’31.285s. Danial Syahmi got up in time to make it to the podium in third place. “I almost crashed on Turn 5 in the last three laps. When we got to the final lap, I was just thinking to out-brake Danial at the last corner. I was on the inside line, Danial was outside. I tried to stay in my line but I didn’t think that we would touch. I would like to apologize to Danial for the incident,” said Izam. Meanwhile, Mohd Fauzi Hassan emerged as the winner of the MSBK 250 Weekend Warrior with 66 points to his name. Boon Siew Honda Racing Team’s Mohd Izam Ikmal chalked up a second win of the weekend with yet another sterling performance in Race 2 of the MSBK 250 class. Relegated to start from the back of the grid for the entire race weekend (due to a technical infringement during the qualifier), Izam was able to cut through the grid like a hot knife through butter. By the time the riders dived into Turn 1, Izam was already on the tail of pole sitter Mohd Danial Syahmi from SIC Racing. Daniel immediately turned on his defensive racing mode, fending off a super-aggressive Izam. The two riders were lapping below their respective qualifying times, but were still a cut above the rest. By the mid-point of the race, the leading duo were already five seconds ahead of the rest. While Daniel and Izam traded leads at the front, ONEXOX TKKR Racing Team team mates Mohd Shafiq Rosli and Mohd Syafieq Aiman Mohd Fauzi kept the fight for P3 within the family. Up ahead, pressure from Izam forced Daniel into an error at the last turn. It was the opening Izam had been waiting for. He picked up his second victory with a time of 20’12.530s. Syahmi conceded in second place with 20’13.126s and Mohd Shafiq Rasol finished in third. “It was touch and go throughout the 8 laps. I simply couldn’t get away from Danial. The victory could have gone either way if Danial had not ran wide at the last corner,” said Izam after the race. Further down afield, the battle to win the ‘Weekend Warrior’ crown in the MSBK B class hotted up. Mohd Fauzi Hassan, Daing Jamilus Herianto, Abdul Hafiz Che Hussin and Mohd Fauzi Mohd Mustakim put up a significant 8-lap fight which eventually ended in favour of Fauzi Hassan. Mohd Izam Ikmal turned the disappointment of starting from the back of the grid (following a disqualification post-qualifying) into a remarkable comeback. But a rocket start was all the Boon Siew Honda Racing Team rider needed to get himself back into the game. By the time the grid flagged off and swooped into Turn 1, Izam had already made it to P5. Within a lap, he joined Mohd Danial Syahmi and Mohd Shafiq Rasol in the leading pack. The battle royale between the three top riders went all the way to the finish line with Danial Syahmi and Izam Ikmal consistently swapping leads. A last corner move by Izam at the final lap secured him the first win of the season with 20’09.226s. “While I was disappointed that I had to start from the back, there was nothing I could do except plan to overtake every rider until I get to the leaders. I am really pleased with how things have turned out,” said Izam. While Izam’s Honda CBR250RR took top honours, Mohd Danial Syahmi’s Kawasaki Ninja 250 finished second with 20’09.294s while Mohd Shafiq Rasol from the ONEXOX TKKR Racing Team piloted his Yamaha YZF-R25 to third place. Boon Siew Honda Racing Team’s Mohd Izam Ikmal set a new MSBK 250 lap record during the qualifying session for Round 1 of the 2021 Malaysia Superbike Championship. After clocking fastest in the free practice with 2’28.590s, Izam bettered his time by more than a second when he secured his right to park on pole position with 2’27.141s. Unfortunately, a technical infringement during the post-qualifying scrutineering erased Izam’s new laptime and the Boon Siew Honda Racing Team rider will have to start the races from the back of the grid. SIC Racing’s Mohd Danial Syahmi A Shahril inherits the pole position with the second fastest time on the grid, 2’28.508s. With Danial Syahmi’s Kawasaki Ninja 250 on pole, Mohd Shafiq Rasol made it a mixed front row when he clocked third fastest 2’30.615s with his Yamaha YZF-R25. A year away from the Honda CBR250RR has done nothing to dampen Izam’s natural feel for his 250cc race bike. The Boon Siew Honda Racing Team rider was quickest to get in form, completing the first day of free practice at the top of the combined timesheets. Izam clocked 2’28.590s to take provisional pole. “We already had our base setting from 2020. Working with that, today was all about getting back into rhythm. I am satisfied with my results today, but we are targeting to bring our laptimes down even further during the qualifying.” Mohd Danial Syahmi from SIC Racing clocked the second fastest time on the grid – 2’29.007s – on his Kawasaki Ninja 250. After a year-long hiatus, the Malaysian superbike riders finally have the chance to get back on the track. The announcement that the 2021 season of the Malaysia Superbike Championship (MSBK) will be held at the Sepang Circuit this weekend has brought out some of the biggest names in the Malaysian motorcycle racing fraternity. The MSBK1000 will most likely be the battleground between Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman and Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi. Both riders are acknowledged as among the best superbike riders in this region. Things are even more interesting in the MSBK600 class where Khairul Idham Pawi is making his racing comeback with the ONEXOX TKKR Racing Team. Mohd Syarifuddin Azman, who is slated to make his full season GP debut next year, will also arrive on the grid with the ZK Racing Team. From the Honda camp, Azroy Hakeem Anuar and Mohd Helmi Azman will finally get to put their brand new Honda CBR600RR through its paces. The bike that was launched in 2020 has yet to strut its stuff on the track. And for the first time in two years, spectators are finally welcome back to the grandstand. Entry to the grandstand is free, but limited only to adults above 18 years old, and must be fully vaccinated. Fans can expect to witness race battles in three classes – the MSBK1000, MSBK600 and MSBK250. In total, three races will be held over the weekend. “The last two years has been quite challenging for the motorcycle racing industry. We are grateful to be back and looking forward to the day when our foreign friends can also join in the race. Meanwhile, the entries for Round 1 is looking to be very promising with all our top riders competing,” said Ron Hogg, Director of Two Wheels Motor Racing, the race promoters of the MSBK. Round 1 of the 2021 Malaysia Superbike Championship (MSBK) is taking place at the Sepang International Circuit from October 15 to 17, 2021. Catch up latest news at malaysiasbk.com. Chat with us.

Boon Siew Honda Racing Team’s young protégé, Mohd Idlan Hakimi Raduan continued to impress in the 250cc genre when he aced the first day of free practices in the season opener of the 2020 Malaysia Superbike Championship (MSBK). Idlan topped the MSBK250 free practice sessions with 2’29.337s. However, the most impressive rider of the day would be SIC Racing Team’s Mohd Danial Syahmi A Shahril. Danial, returning to racing after a long injury, ended the day as the second fastest rider with 2’30.160s. Hi-Rev SCK Honda Racing Team’s Mohd Izam Ikmal was the third fastest with 2’30.954s Here are some quotes from the riders after the first day of practice: Mohd Idlan Haqimi Raduan (Honda) (Boon Siew Honda Racing Team) “I’m happy with my results today but I think I still have a long way to go in the 250cc class. The last time I rode on the Honda CBR250 RR was in March this year during the ARRC. Since then, I’ve not had the opportunity to throw my leg over a full-frame bike. Today, my team told me to take things easy and just get the rhythm back.” Mohd Danial Syahmi A Shahril (Kawasaki) (SIC Racing Team) “Everyone in the paddock has been talking about getting back in rhythm. But among all of us, I think I’m the one who most critically needs to get into racing form. But it feels good to be back on a bike again and my condition is pretty good. I just need to regain my confidence level again. Towards that end, I’m working with the team to improve the handling of my bike so that it will be more comfortable for me.” Abdullah Qayyum Abd Razak (Kawasaki) (Horizon Racing Team) “Today was tough for us. During FP1, we were very focused on getting our rear suspension right. The rain in FP2 did not improve matters. So we will need to see how it goes during the qualifying tomorrow.” Daing Jamilus Herianto (Kawasaki) (Pakelo KBSHM PHR Racing Team) “Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the last time our team raced was in December last year. Naturally, we faced a number of technical issues today. Our target for this round? Top 10 would be good!”
